C. Patrick Heidkamp, Department of Geography, Southern Connecticut State University, spoke on "Urban Food Production and Community Resilience."
Over the last several years, local food production-specifically urban agriculture and community gardening—has increasingly been viewed as an important contributor to food security as well as the solution to a number of other problems that plague urban areas in the United States.
The presentation was part of the Local Food Systems Conference held at the Toledo Hilton. The conference aimed to bring together both academics and practitioners to share their knowledge, experience, and expertise with regard to developing and maintaining local food systems in old industrial regions.
