Jay Shafer is the founder of the Tumbleweed Tiny House Company and a recognized leader in the small living movement. A designer specializing in sustainable architecture and urban planning, he conceived of “little buildings” in 1997 for economical reasons, both practical and personal. In addition to concerns about the impact of ever-larger houses on the environment, and about maintaining unnecessary space in his own living quarters, he says, “The simple, slower lifestyle my homes have afforded is a luxury for which I am continually grateful.” He currently lives in an 89-square-foot home of his own creation in Sebastopol, California. Mr. Shafer spoke about the growing movement toward living smaller and simpler.
