New Jersey Congressman Donald Payne will give the commemoration's keynote. Earlier this year, Payne sponsored a resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives pushing for a commission to recognize the 200th anniversary of the enactment of the Act to prohibit the importation of slaves. The conference will feature speakers tracing the legal and political underpinnings that propped up the American slave trade, "Cycle of Optimism and Despair." Sponsored by the University of Toledo College of Law and the Graduate Program in Policy History of Bowling Green State University, the commemoration begins with a screening of "Traces of the Trade" and discussion on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. The Saturday conference is free and open to the public.
