Professor Shapiro will present "As China Goes, So Goes the Planet: International Implications of China's Environmental Problems." She was one of the first Americans to work in China following the normalization of U>S.-China relations in 1979. While in China, she taught journalism and literature to college students and married a Chinese native before returning to the United States to become a professor and author. Fluent in Chinese, Ms. Shapiro often serves as an interpreter and as a representative of the State Dept. She has authored or co-authored numerous books and articles relating to the political and social dynamics of environmental degradation and sustainable development in China. She teaches a variety of courses at American University.
