Run Time: 45:26

Baldemar Velásquez is an internationally recognized leader in the farmworker and immigrant rights movements. As co-founder and president of the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC), Velásquez set international precedents in labor history by unionizing and empowering the most marginalized workers in the country. His long-fought campaigns are inspired by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, Cesar Chavez and Martin Luther King. For this work he was named a MacArthur Fellow (1989) and awarded the Order of the Aztec Eagle (1994), the highest honor Mexico can bestow a non-citizen. Now he’s working with Toledo’s urban youth in an employment readiness and leadership program.
